I was at a function a few nights ago and as is customary, after a few minutes the conversation turned to “And, what do you do for a living?” I think that question would have been so much easier to answer if I had said something different to what I actually do. Well the answer would have been shorter and no explanation would be required.

I was at a function a few nights ago and as is customary, after a few minutes the conversation turned to “And, what do you do for a living?” I think that question would have been so much easier to answer if I had said something different to what I actually do. Well the answer would have been shorter and no explanation would be required.

“I’m a writer and expert in the psychology and dynamics of online dating and social networking communication. I also specialize in online romance scams, cyber bullying and child predators online”. This usually gets an “Oh!” followed by a giggle, followed by a look of puzzlement. After a quick look to see if I can spot any wedding rings and a little more conversation to assess if they are single, I ask the question “Are you dating online?”

This produces the most extraordinary response from about 97% of people I ask this question too. Seriously, I could have asked the question do you have Syphilis? And get the same reaction!

I watch the expressions on their face, searching for the answer to the next question that they are asking themselves. How the heck did she know that? I only met her 15 minutes ago! And then comes the look of horror. “Oh, No! Don’t tell me she has seen my profile on the dating site!”

Truth of the matter is, there is nothing magical or paranormal about me and no, I didn’t see your profile on the dating site. I’m just very knowledgeable about the worlds of online dating and social networking. And I can assure you, as you will soon see, that there is nothing wrong and everything right with dating online.

After researching over 6,000 sites around the world and interviewing and coaching 10’s of 1,000 of singles over the last 18 years, you get a pretty good “feel” for Singles and Dating.

People searching for their version of happy-ever-after online is very possible and quite normal these days so, I’m giving you my secret. Millions and millions of people date online. Don’t believe me? Let’s look at the global picture of online dating, have a look at this and see what you think:

According to the US Census, 40% of Americans over the age of 18 years old frequently use the services of online dating sites. This has resulted in about 120,000 marriages annually.

Nearly 48% of online daters happen to be men. This is a huge shift as up until 12 months ago it was 56%. (the girls are finally catching on, that this is where all the singles guys are – but that’s for another article).

In India, 51% of urban Indians regularly use dating websites; this in itself is astounding as this is a culture still steeped in the tradition of arranged marriages. While 48% still use the traditional matrimonial sites to find their life partner.

In Canada, 1.1 to 1.2 million people frequent online dating websites.

Approximately 38.6 million European’s use online personal sites per month. this equates to 50% of Europeans using online dating sites to find “the one”.

China also expects online dating memberships to grow in huge numbers. With 64 million singles residing in the nation, the market is expected to double in the present year and is already touted as being worth 1.3 billion USD.

I don’t have current statistics for Australia but suffice to say that according to some unqualified sources the figures on Aussies dating online is around the 6 million mark and growing rapidly – not bad for a country that supports 22 million people.

The online dating Industry is worth billions. Yes, you read correctly – billions and in this economic climate, you will see more people heading to the online arenas to seek companionship as they don’t wish to go it alone. 1 in 5 people meet their partner now online.

Thanks to Social Networking platforms like, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pintrest, YouTube, of which most of us have an account in at least one if not all, it is socially acceptable to communicate online and therefore find or seek a romantic partner this way; A natural human progression really. No longer do you have to be thrown in with every other single on a dating site either, trying to find someone who is compatible to you; enter the worlds of Niche Dating.

Niche Dating Sites are sites that are specifically tailored to career, sexual preference, religious preferences, stage-in-life, hobbies you name it! You can even find a site for Geeks, Farmers, Pet Lovers and even Trekkies to find your own version of Princess Leah or Hans Solo and how good is that!

The world of online dating is full of people just like you, yes, I mean just like you. And over the next few weeks you and I, together will explore every fascinating part of it from signing up on a site, single parent dating, baby boomer dating, gay dating, religious dating, electronic infidelity, romance scams and everything else you can possibly think of. I will include tips for communication online and tips for dating offline. Everything you need to do to have a great time, look to find success but also stay safe.

Online Dating is a fantastic medium to potentially find your version of happy-ever-after and make some great friends along the way if you choose too. As an expert in this field it is my opinion that it is safer to date online than it is in bars (I am only speaking about safety here) The online worlds have their predators too and I’m going to guide you step-by-step on how to spot them so you will be able to see the warning signs.

I look forward to sharing this exciting journey with you. If you have any questions we will create that area on here for you shortly. I won’t be able to answer every question however, I’m sure you will find it engaging. So don’t forget to keep checking back on this site.

Until then, stay safe and make good choices,

Smiles to you,

Yvonne Rice
